Bright Spaces, Big Changes: Inside Contact’s Bathroom Renovation
We are excited to share the completion of our recent bathroom renovations, which have brought much-needed improvements to Contact. These upgrades are more than just cosmetic—they’re part of our ongoing commitment to creating a warm, safe and comfortable environment for the young women we support.
Bathroom 1 previously consisted of a cramped shower and toilet divided into two separate rooms. The narrow shower lacked space for changing, leaving residents to walk back to their rooms in towels. The dark and cramped layout, felt uncomfortable and impractical. Now, the transformation is remarkable. Removing the dividing wall has created a bright, open space with plenty of room for the girls to get changed. This thoughtful redesign provides not only functionality but also comfort and dignity.
Bathroom 2 initially appeared to be in better condition, but hidden issues told a different story. A shifted shower tray caused leaks through three storeys, with temporary repairs offering no long-term solution. Outdated plastic wall cladding and a cold, institutional design failed to reflect the welcoming home we strive to provide. Today, the bathroom has been completely revamped. The structural issues have been fully resolved, and the space now features elegant tiles and a warm, inviting design. Some of the girls have even likened the new bathroom to a spa!
The feedback from our residents has been overwhelmingly positive, and the upgrades have had a meaningful impact on their daily lives. Alex, one of our dedicated support workers, shared:
“When girls first arrive here, many tell us they are nervous about staying in a ‘hostel,’ imagining it to be cold and unwelcoming. They are often surprised to find a warm, safe, and comfortable environment that feels much closer to a ‘real’ home. The recent bathroom renovations have been a key part of that. Since completing the first bathroom, the girls have shared how much they enjoy the new design, appreciating the improved functionality and additional space to get changed—and not having to return to their rooms in a towel! It’s been a meaningful upgrade, and we are thrilled to provide such beautiful, peaceful spaces for our girls as they navigate challenging and traumatic times.”
These renovations were made possible through a grant from one of our generous funders, to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks. Together, we’ve been able to make a significant improvement to our hostel, providing the girls with spaces that offer dignity, comfort, and a sense of home.
