Christmas at Contact Hostel: A Reflection by Phyllis

Our support worker Phyllis, tells us all about why Christmas at Contact Hostel is special to her, and all the ways that we make the festive season one of warmth and joy for our residents.

“A Christmas at Contact Hostel is unlike any other. I’ve worked here for many years, and every Christmas feels like a special opportunity to spread kindness and love. For me, Christmas is about making sure the girls we support feel valued, cared for and included, no matter their background.

Each year, I look forward to cooking up a feast that celebrates everyone. While a traditional English turkey dinner is a staple, I also prepare jerk chicken, hearty curries and dishes that reflect the diverse cultures and dietary requirements of our residents. But it’s not just about the food; it’s about creating a space where everyone feels at home, even if they’re far from it.

Whilst we recognise not all of our residents celebrate Christmas, we focus on the universal values of generosity and togetherness. Every resident is invited to join the festivities if they wish, with gifts lovingly provided by Contact Hostel and our wonderful local community. Watching their faces light up as they open presents reminds me why I love working here, especially on Christmas Day.

For those of us at Contact, it’s a day to share joy, laughter, and warmth—proof that even in challenging times, there’s a place where people care deeply for one another.”
