From One Woman’s Dream to a Lifeline for Many
Today, we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passing of Brigid Murphy, the visionary founder of Contact Hostel. This year also marks what would have been her 100th birthday, offering a poignant moment to reflect on her enduring legacy and the profound impact she had on the lives of countless young women.
In 1970, Brigid Murphy, a former nun with a compassionate heart and unwavering determination, established Contact Hostel in Manchester. Whilst working at a school for young offenders, she became deeply concerned about the lack of safe housing options for girls leaving care and other institutions. Brigid recognised the vulnerabilities these young women faced—often finding themselves homeless or resorting to dangerous or illegal activities to keep themselves safe. Using a mix of government grants and her own resources, she founded Contact Hostel, creating a sanctuary for those in need.
As the first facility of its kind in the country, Contact Hostel set a pioneering standard for supporting homeless teenage girls.
Brigid sadly passed away in 2005, but her legacy lives on at Contact. Over 1000 young women have found stability, support and hope, all within a nurturing environment. The dedicated team at the hostel continues to embody Brigid's spirit, offering guidance and care to each resident.
Throughout 2025, we plan to honour Brigid's memory and celebrate her remarkable compassion and foresight, which have left an indelible mark on Manchester and beyond.
